League….and we're off:

Thankfully our club football season got lift-off last Saturday and all scheduled games were played.

On Saturday afternoon our first team travelled to Fenagh for their first game in the new structured secondary league. Despite a very wet afternoon both teams gave their best efforts with Gortletteragh being awarded the win by the narrowest of margins, final score Gortletteragh 3-8, Fenagh 3-7.

Underage:

Our U17's took on St Brigids on home ground on Saturday morning and came away with a win after a game of two halves in very wet conditions, Gortletteragh dominating in the first half and St Brigids doing likewise in the second half. Final score Gortletteragh 1-9, St Brigids 0-10. On Sunday afternoon Rinn Gaels U13's played round four of the Leitrim-Longford League away to St Mary's where a much stronger St Mary's side took the win.

Hurling Workshop:
We had a very successful Hurling workshop last Saturday for our underage hurlers. We had the pleasure of having Darragh Cox Sligo/ Leitrim GDA and Martin Forgarty the National Hurling GDA all the way from Kilkenny. What an eventful and informative session we had with the lads. You can see how Kilkenny are so successful with the methods Martin demonstrated. We had a great attendance by interested players and they seem to have really enjoyed the whole session from start to finish.  A very big 'thank you' to Darragh and Martin for giving their time and expertise last Saturday, which proved to be well worth every second, and it wasn't just the young players that were impressed !

Underage Hurling:
Following on from the successful hurling workshop last Saturday – we are now calling on all past and present hurlers for a little bit of your time to help out with getting our new underage hurlers off the ground. If anyone could help out in any way at all please contact a club official, we would greatly appreciate it.

2019 was a successful year for us at underage level and on Sunday 22nd of December last we presented medals to our U12's, U13's and U15's. We extend a very big 'Thank you' to our own Cathal McCrann and Jack Heslin and "Leitrim player of the Year 2019" Shane Moran for doing the presentation. Shane gave a great account on how he became the 'best' player in Leitrim and all the hard work that goes along with it. Thanks to Terry Kelleher for doing MC for the night. We also held our Christmas Hamper draw which was a huge success and congratulations to the winner Niall Donlon, Tooman.  We'd like to thank everyone who helped out on the night, from doing the sound, taking photos, organising the hall before and after the event, preparing and serving refreshments and all who sponsored prizes for the hamper. A big thanks to all the underage players who made the Christmas Hamper draw such a great success. A special thanks to Santa for making an appearance on the night!! Once again, a big well done to the successful U12's, U13's and U15's. Wishing you all a very Happy New Year and looking forward to more successes in the future.

Park Development:

Gortletteragh GAA Club is currently in the middle of an ambitious facilities development. The development includes the construction of a new full-size sand based all-weather pitch adjacent to existing pitch, a community walking track around the existing pitch and new pitch and it's also hoped to construct a community playground. The inclusion of a walking track at the GAA club grounds offers all generations of the community the chance to maintain a healthier lifestyle in a safe and community friendly way. The development aims to provide facilities that will secure the success of current and future generations in Gortletteragh. It will become an excellent amenity and focal point for our parish and our community.

Work is well advanced on the new pitch and the walkway. The work on the pitch commenced in 2018 and involved the stripping and stockpiling on the topsoil. A considerable amount of soil was moved in the cut and fill to bring playing area to the required level. Work then stopped for the winter to allow soil to settle. In 2019 further progress was made with the drainage works completed. The next stage is laying of topsoil, sand and seeding.

A development fundraising initiative is ongoing. Many people have given generously to this over the last number of years and we would like to thank these donors for their support. We would love to get more people on board this fundraising drive. For further details on how you can contribute to this ambitious project please contact Terry Kelleher on (087) 7381996 or Colum Fox on (087) 2624718.

Under 15 Championship Final

We brought the curtain down on our underage football year last Saturday in Ballinamore playing in the Under 15 A Championship Final. Hard luck to the players and coaches. They gave it their all on the day and just fell short. It would be easy to feel disappointed not to come away with a win but these lads can hold their heads up high with the standard of football they have played all year and gave us some great days out. What a year of football these lads have given us. To win the Divisions 1 League and then to go on to get back into the A Championship Final. They have played some excellent football throughout the year. We would like to thank their coaches Frank, Gerard, Eamonn and Seamus for all your hard work all year. Well done to all the players for their effort, hard work and time they have give to the club this year. We like to thank Gavin Mitchell for the sponsoring the food after the game.
