ACL Division 1 Round 5 Gortletteragh vs Bornacoola

The Division 1 clash on Sunday afternoon had added importance given both teams positions in the table and two points would be a huge boost to both teams. Conditions were ideal for a game in contrast to the previous week.  Cathal McCrann made his presence felt from the start, converting a free, and Conor Reynolds added a point from play shortly afterwards. Mark mcCloskey responded from a free ad the other end before Reynolds won his second penalty in as many weeks, but the Bornacoola keeper was equal to Cathal Quinn's low shot. Conor Reynolds added another on his left and Padraig Gallagher added two from play with his mazy runs in the inside forward line and Cathal McCrann added another following a wide from John Reynolds and r a long range strike from Bornacoola's Michael Duignan at the other end left it 0-6 to 0-4 at the halftime whiste. As the second half began Barry Tiernan got on the score sheet with a point and Bornacoola replied in kind before Cathal Quinn converted a monster free wide out on the left. As the half progressed Mark Duignan made way for Ciarán Egan and Gavin Mitchell was introduced as relief for Barry Tiernan as he had a blood injury tended. Cathal McCrann pointed from a tight angle on the left and Cathal Quinn added another to leave two between the sides with time running down. Bornacoola ran from deep and were rewarded with scores that took their tally to eight points  Tempers were running high near the end and John McGuinness was yellow carded after an off the ball incident with Conor Reynolds and in the following passages of play the hardworking Kevin McGrath and John Reynolds added points to extend the lead to four. As the Bors went in search of a goal in the final minutes with a lot of stoppages for frees, Niall Woods launched on an run from the fullback line and following his run and pass the ball was dropped into the square from wide out on the right and Kevin McGrath capitalised on a spill to finish to the back of the net. The final whistle blew shortly after with the final score Gortletteragh 1-12 Bornacoola 0-8 and an important two points secured before the league goes on hiatus as the Connacht Championship approaches.

ACL Division 1 Round 4 Melvin Gaels vs Gortletteragh

The Seniors travelled to Kinlough looking to improve to 2 wins and 2 losses in Division 1 as they faced Melvin Gaels on Sunday afternoon. The weather was definitely not ideal for free flowing  football with the half time score more than reflecting the poor conditions. We had a dream start with corner forward Conor Reynolds finishing to the top corner of the net following a lung bursting run from Niall Duffy. Nigel Keighran added a point after Melvin Gaels Peter McGowan added two close range frees following a few attempts that were wide of the target. Cathal Quinn then finished a penalty following a foul on Conor Reynolds. We entered half time with a 2-2 to 0-3 lead. As the second half began Melvin Gaels added two more points from frees and a point from play before Paul Brennan struck for a goal to give the County champions a one point lead. As we struggled to get a foothold in the game against a very strong wind Melvin Gaels pushed on to a three point lead. Melvin Gaels' keeper made a point blank stop on a goalbound Padraig Gallagher shot and managed to divert Gavin Mitchell's shot from the rebound away from the net as it finished Melvin Gaels 1-8 Gortletteragh 2-2. It was Melvin Gael's second win on the bounce against South Leitrim opposition after beating Mohill last weekend while we are now 1-3 for the campaign as we host neighbours Bornacoola this coming Sunday.
